In 2017 a faculty LMS Enhancement committee was formed and charged with identifying outcomes to improve the experience of students and faculty with LMS functionality. That group determined that Blackboard was not meeting the needs of the user community particularly in the areas of SIS Integration, LMS system stability, Mobile capabilities and system interfaces. User feedback collected through Techqual surveys also reported the LMS as a top challenge to address.
The LMS Enhancement Committee then recommended that technical teams explore the specific problematic areas in Canvas to determine if it would provide solutions. The results of that exploration were positive.
Faculty senate then began the process of piloting Canvas in summer 2019 and is continuing to expand on that with additional pilots in subsequent semesters.
